SUMMARY:From Performance Gaps to Growth: Building Effective Performance Improvement Plans
DESCRIPTION:Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) can be an important supervisory tool in a manager’s toolbelt to help a struggling staff member\, but they are often not used as frequently or effectively as they should be. In this session\, we explore what a PIP is\, when it should be used\, and best practices for drafting not only the PIP itself\, but progress reports during the period of the PIP. You will hear from both a local manager and an HR representative on best practices\, potential downfalls\, and other key considerations to keep in mind when considering and implementing a PIP. We will use real life examples to illustrate the difference between a successful and unsuccessful PIP and discuss how to work in collaboration with struggling staff members to help them succeed–during the period of the PIP itself and long after it’s ended.

SUMMARY:Using Data to Make People-Centered Decisions of Any Size
DESCRIPTION:Legal aid managers make decisions every day—some small and immediate\, others shaping programs\, staffing\, and long-term strategy. In an environment of complex community need and limited resources\, data can be a powerful tool to support those decisions. But to be effective\, data must be used in ways that remain grounded in people: clients\, advocates\, and communities.\n This session explores how managers can use data to inform both day-to-day decisions and larger organizational choices while maintaining a relational\, community-centered approach. Drawing on Cleveland Legal Aid’s Wealth Building Program\, participants will learn how intake trends\, client feedback\, and a community needs assessment revealed widespread loss of generational wealth—and how those insights helped create a new practice area\, including decisions about outreach\, staffing\, and service delivery.\n \n The session will also examine how case data\, outcomes\, and workload patterns can inform supervision\, resource allocation\, and performance management. Participants will learn to identify the most useful data points for different decisions\, understand the limits of what data can show\, and integrate quantitative and qualitative insights into their management approach. Consistent with a people-centered framework\, the session will highlight strategies for sharing and interpreting data transparently\, incorporating staff perspectives\, and using data to strengthen trust\, collaboration\, and decision-making.

SUMMARY:Weaving Community Voice Throughout Your Strategic Decision-Making Process
DESCRIPTION:The client communities that we represent have been historically disinvested in\, and are currently being stripped of their rights\, power and dignity. As we develop our internal strategic plans\, implement policies and make decisions- how are we intentionally creating space for the community input that is so mission connected? This session will include the perspective of 3 community members in the Baltimore region who have fully woven their perspectives into the routine decision making of client programming at Community Law Center\, and present a framework for implementing this model of decision making in your own programs.

SUMMARY:Integrating Community Based Organizations into Legal Aid Intake Systems: Lessons from the Field
DESCRIPTION:Most legal services programs maintain strong partnerships with other organizations serving low-income households in their community. But rarely are those partnerships truly integrated into a legal services program’s intake system. This session will provide two different examples\, from two very different perspectives – one rural and statewide\, one urban and issue-specific – on how legal services programs can better integrate their work with the work of other community-based partners\, to the benefit of clients.

SUMMARY:Malpractice and Ethics Hot Topics
DESCRIPTION:This session examines the malpractice exposure and ethics questions that most affect those who manage and supervise legal work in legal aid organizations. We will discuss the recent US Supreme Court case\, Berk v. Choy\, and its impact on litigation. We will explore how to define and document the scope of representation and frequent missteps which may impact legal aid organizations. We will address the responsible use of artificial intelligence—by lawyers and staff\, and increasingly by the clients they serve—and what that means for competence\, confidentiality\, and supervision. We will discuss obligations regarding supervision of lawyers and non-lawyers and how best to meet those obligations through policies\, procedures\, and effective training. We will also cover the growing complexity of multijurisdictional practice in this remote world. Finally\, we will explore the ethical and practical considerations that arise when withdrawing as counsel. Drawing on the ABA Model Rules\, ABA Formal Opinions\, and real-world scenarios relevant to legal aid practice nationwide\, this session equips managers to spot emerging issues early\, strengthen their organizations’ internal safeguards\, and support the attorneys they supervise in meeting their professional obligations.

SUMMARY:Trust is Built Before You Need It: Communication Strategies for Leading Through Organizational Change
DESCRIPTION:Legal aid managers are frequently required to lead through uncertainty\, including mergers\, leadership transitions\, funding changes\, restructuring\, and evolving community needs. In these moments\, communication is one of the most critical management tools\, but also one of the most difficult to execute effectively.\n \n This session provides a practical\, skills-based framework for communicating during organizational change in ways that build and sustain trust. Drawing on real-world experience from a multi-organization legal aid merger in a rural\, multi-office system\, presenters will focus on specific communication decisions managers must make\, including what to communicate\, when to communicate it\, and how to tailor messaging across roles and audiences.\n \n The session will address concrete management challenges such as communicating when decisions are still in progress\, responding to staff questions without complete information\, managing rumors and uncertainty\, and aligning messaging across leadership roles. Participants will be introduced to a simple decision-making framework for structuring communication during change\, along with examples of messaging strategies used in real organizational scenarios.\n \n Attendees will leave with practical tools they can apply immediately in supervision and organizational leadership\, including approaches for managing uncertainty\, strengthening credibility during change\, and maintaining alignment across leadership teams.

SUMMARY:From Overwhelmed to Organized: Project Management Systems for Managing Attorneys
DESCRIPTION:Managing attorneys wear a lot of hats. Client advocate. Supervisor. Trainer. Compliance officer. But somewhere between the caseload and the compliance calendar\, there's a job that rarely gets named: project manager.\n \n This session is designed for managing attorneys and legal aid managers at any level who are looking for practical\, low-barrier tools and systems to bring more structure\, visibility\, and collaboration to their teams. Whether you're managing a team of two or twenty\, coordinating across offices or time zones\, or just trying to reduce the number of things that fall through the cracks\, this session will give you a working toolkit you can put into practice.\n \n We'll explore how managing attorneys can apply project management principles and tools\, from simple task tracking systems to shared collaboration platforms\, and even Generative AI tools\, without requiring a technology background or a dedicated IT department. We'll cover how to match the right tools to your team's actual workflow\, how to build buy-in from staff who are already stretched thin\, and how to create systems that don't collapse when key people are out.\n \n Attendees will leave with a framework for evaluating project management tools\, practical examples of what can work in legal aid environments\, and concrete first steps for building or strengthening the organizational infrastructure behind their team's legal work.

SUMMARY:The Strategic Role of Leaders in Program Innovation and Mission
DESCRIPTION:The session guides leaders to move their programs beyond tactical decisions and move forward strategic and visionary change.
